Depth of field refers to the region of a photograph that is within focus. A photograph with a deep depth of field will have a relatively large range of distances in focus, whereas a photograph with a shallow depth of field will have a relatively small range of distances in focus. Both the images above and below make use of a shallow depth of field.
TipsMoving closer to a subject will often reduce the depth of field of a photograph, and moving farther from the subject will often yield a deeper depth of field.
Photographs captured at relatively low aperture settings tend to contain shallow depths of field, whereas those taken at higher aperture settings contain deeper depths of field.
